Welcome makers! At Indigo Fragrance, we want you to feel confident using our fragrance oils in your creations. Please review the following product information, testing recommendations, and safety guidelines before use.
About Our Fragrance Oils
Sold by Weight, Not Volume
Our fragrance oils are filled and sold by weight rather than by fluid volume. Because fragrance oils have different densities, some bottles may appear fuller than others.
Premium, Concentrated Fragrance Oils
Our fragrance oils are:
- 100% concentrated and never diluted
- Premium Grade A quality
- Manufactured in the USA
- Not tested on animals
- Packaged in recyclable, phthalate-free HDPE plastic bottles
- Carefully evaluated through extensive quality testing before being offered for sale
Our fragrances are formulated in accordance with applicable RIFM and IFRA fragrance-safety standards. Please review the individual product documentation and IFRA certificate for usage limits specific to your intended application.
Orders and Sample Sizes
Indigo Fragrance does not have a minimum purchase requirement. We welcome makers, hobbyists, growing businesses, and established manufacturers—and orders of every size!
Our fragrance oil sample vials contain approximately 1.15 mL, just enough to get a sniff of what a fragrance smells like or to do a small test to see how the fragrance oil works in your chosen application.
Sample vials purchased by the customer may not be individually marked when a fragrance is not skin-safe. By purchasing a sample, the customer is responsible for confirming that the fragrance is suitable for the intended application.
Complimentary samples that are not approved for skin-contact applications will be marked Not Skin Safe.
Because fragrance preferences and product formulations vary, we strongly recommend purchasing a sample before investing in a larger size.
All fragrance oil sales are final.
Shelf Life and Storage
Most fragrance oils have an approximate shelf life of one year when stored properly.
For best results:
- Keep bottles tightly closed when not in use
- Store fragrance oils in a cool, dry location
- Protect them from direct sunlight and excessive heat
- Keep fragrance oils away from open flames and ignition sources
Changes in color over time do not always indicate that a fragrance oil is no longer usable. However, fragrance performance should always be evaluated before use.
Always Test in Your Application
A fragrance oil may smell very different in the bottle than it does in a finished product.
Fragrance oils are designed to be incorporated into products such as candles, wax melts, soaps, lotions, room sprays, reed diffusers, and other approved applications. The scent may change significantly once it is blended with wax, soap, lotion, or another product base. It's always best to smell it in a finished product!
Always conduct your own testing to determine:
- Fragrance strength
- Recommended fragrance load
- Product stability
- Wick compatibility
- Scent throw
- Color changes
- Skin-safety limits
- Overall performance in your specific formula
Testing performed by Indigo Fragrance or by private testers should never replace your own testing. Ingredients, equipment, methods, temperatures, product bases, and environmental conditions can all affect your final results.
Indigo Fragrance is not responsible when a customer’s test results differ from ours.
Candle-Making Recommendations
After pouring a candle, allow it to cure before evaluating the fragrance. Giving the wax time to set allows the fragrance and wax to bind and gives the scent notes time to develop and come to life!
Recommended cure times vary depending on the wax and candle formula being used.
Citrus fragrance oils may occasionally produce a fuel-like note while burning. When working with citrus fragrances, pouring at the lowest temperature recommended for your wax may help improve performance.
Always test each fragrance oil with your chosen wax, wick, vessel, dye, fragrance load, and manufacturing process.
Bath, Body and Soap Applications
Fragrance oils can behave differently depending on the product base and formulation.
Some fragrance oils may:
- Discolor soap, lotion, or other bath and body products
- Cause certain product bases to thin
- Change texture or consistency
- Affect the appearance or stability of the finished product
Thorough testing is essential before producing or selling a finished product.
Not every fragrance oil is approved for skin-contact applications. Review the fragrance oil’s individual IFRA documentation before using it in soap, lotion, perfume, body products, or any other skin-contact applications.
Safety First
Fragrance oils are highly concentrated materials and must be handled carefully.
Please follow these important safety guidelines:
- Never apply undiluted fragrance oil directly to the skin
- Always dilute fragrance oil in an appropriate product base or solvent
- Never consume or ingest fragrance oil
- Do not use fragrance oils near open flames, sparks, or heat sources
- Avoid contact with the eyes
- Avoid prolonged skin contact
- Avoid breathing concentrated fragrance vapors
- Use fragrance oils in a well-ventilated area
- Keep fragrance oils out of reach of children and pets
- Review all available safety documentation before use
Eye, skin, inhalation, and ingestion hazards may be present. Always use appropriate protective equipment and safe handling practices.
Customer Responsibility
The customer is solely responsible for determining whether a fragrance oil is appropriate for their intended use and for testing the fragrance oil in their complete product formulation.
Indigo Fragrance is not responsible for:
- Products manufactured using our fragrance oils or supplies
- Improper use or handling
- Accidents or injuries
- Adverse skin reactions
- Product instability or discoloration
- Differences between our testing and the customer’s results
- Failure to follow IFRA usage limits or other safety documentation
Any import fees, customs duties, taxes, or related charges are the sole responsibility of the purchaser.
Test, Test, Test!
Every finished product is a complete system. Your fragrance oil, product base, fragrance load, equipment, temperatures, additives, wick, container, cure time, and production method all work together.
Careful testing is the best way to create a safe, stable, and beautifully scented finished product.
Test thoroughly. Keep detailed notes. Make adjustments. Then test again.
